Belo Horizonte and Ending Hunger

If we were to analyze the role of local governments in North America, the most common responsibilities of municipalities consist of water and sewer services, road/sidewalk maintenance, upkeep of parks, garbage collection, snow removal, and many other infrastructure-related needs of an urban centre.
What we don’t find on that list of ‘things-to-do’ is food.
Whereas [...]

Journalists slap the fatally silent Canadian Food Inspection Agency

May 25, 2009 by Mike Soron

This is not welcome news for one of Canada’s most important public bodies.
The Canadian Association of Journalists [CAJ] has given the Canadian Food Inspection Agency [CFIA] it’s 2008 Code of Silence Award for the agency’s efforts to conceal from the public information about fatal failures in food safety.
The award announcement noted CFIA’s struggle to delay [...]

Food bank use in Canada remains disturbingly high. Cuts to the welfare system in the 1990s, changes in employment and wages, and mismanaged public spending drove up the number of Canadians accessing food banks. In March 2008, over 700,000 Canadians turned to food banks.
As Canada moves deeper into recession and more Canadians seek transitional support [...]

A Perplexing and Promising Tale of Milk

Thumbnail image for A Perplexing and Promising Tale of Milk May 1, 2009 by Jon Steinman

Slowly but surely, the absurdity of our globalized and resource-intensive food system is becoming apparent to more and more North Americans.
One of the most interesting sectors of the food system to deconstruct and from which to unearth just one of these absurdities is Canada’s dairy sector.
Helping to share this absurdity is Wayne Harris, [...]

March 26, 2009 by Ryan Slifka

“My path was through the garden. -Michael Pollan”
If you’re reading this from Canada, you’re probably very much aware of the state of journalism in this country. While the economy tanks, the Calgary Herald prints Spock and the U.S.S. Enterprise as the cover story. I enjoy Star Trek as much as the next person (perhaps even [...]

Local 101 -tNR #YYC events

March 7, 2009 by Ryan Slifka

On Friday March 28th, Forage Foods is putting on “Local 101″ on from 1:30-6:00pm at Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre to connect Calgarians with producers and businesspeople on the local food scene. While I am skeptical as to the revolutionary potential of something put on by what seems to be an upscale-minded catering/food production company, it might [...]

Food security is radical politics

March 6, 2009 by Ryan Slifka
Thumbnail image for Food security is radical politics
